Stroke Care

Gold SealPrimary Stroke Center Accreditation Makes a Difference

Today, strokes are the third leading cause of death, and HCA network hospitals are committed to ensuring our patients have access to the highest levels of stroke care available. The gold standard today is earning Stroke Accreditation from the Joint Commission. 13 of our 14 West Florida hospitals have achieved this milestone.

Comprehensive Stroke Center

Northside Hospital is one of only 18 hospitals in the state to earn Comprehensive Stroke Center designation. To receive this distinction, a hospital must achieve Primary Stroke Center certification and provide a full spectrum of neuroscience-related care, including the latest in detection, treatment and rehabilitation for stroke patients.

Saving Lives and Improving Outcomes

Access to high quality stroke care can not only mean the difference between life and death, but it can also make a difference in a patient’s quality of life. For about 80% of stroke patients, immediate diagnosis and treatment can reduce or eliminate permanent disability. All of our facilities administer clot-busting drugs to patients who meet the criteria. The key is to get immediately to the emergency department, at the onset of symptoms.

Stroke Symptom & Warning Signs

One of the biggest challenges today remains getting people to recognize stroke symptoms. Call 911 if you or someone your know experiences any of these stroke warning signs:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
